Mesa- We don’t need no stinking badge numbers!

16 07 2009

Top 10 reasons why Mesa PD doesn’t need no stinking badge numbers:

10. Police OFFICER, Loan OFFICER – same difference…

9. “Officer 99, meet Detective 99, Detective 99, meet Sgt 99, Sgt 99, meet Lt. 99…” – Get Smart

8.  000 + 000 + 000= three time loser

7. “This is the city,  Mesa, Arizona.  I work here.  I carry a badge, but I couldn’t tell you what the numbers mean.  My name’s Friday.” – Dragnet

6.  Chief Wiggum: “All right, you scrawny beanpoles: becoming a cop is not something that happens overnight. It takes one solid weekend of training to get that badge.” – The Simpsons

5.  Because administrative tyranny is how Mesa conducts business.

4.  Any number multiplied by zero is still zero and is debated to be not a real number – does that mean that a zero badge is not real?

3. “Hey, my kid has one of those just like it!”

2.  Retiring a badge isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be.

1.  We already have employee numbers!

Many people voted for the new badge because the wording of the old badge, “OFFICER POLICE MESA ARIZ.” was just silly. We voted for the new badge to read, “POLICE OFFICER” across the top and “MESA POLICE” on the bottom. Somewhere along the line someone decided to disregard the popular vote and commit administrative tyranny by removing the title of “POLICE” form the top of the badge. Very disappointing. Now those who voted for the new badge are not happy and those who wanted to keep the old badge are not happy.

Now the badge can be used interchangeably between teleserve officer, detention officer, security officer, animal control officer, and police service officer because the badge does not distinguish what kind of officer is wearing it and we have a variety of officers within the department. Just about anyone can wear it now.

So we went from a very silly badge, “Officer Police” to a very silly badge, “Officer Mesa Police”. The word “officer” is not a stand alone title, it begs for something more in front of it or behind it, for example: loan officer, title officer, police service officer, detention officer, security officer, officer friendly, etc. I think you get the point. So, as long as the badges need to be returned, put the title of POLICE OFFICER across the top like we all voted for!! Lets not be the silly badge department anymore, its very embarrassing.
